UM Cost Sharing Information

What it is

When the full stated cost of a project is provided by both the sponsor and the University, the University's formal commitment to fund a portion of a sponsored project is referred to as cost sharing.

Documenting Cost Sharing Commitments

Requirements of Research Sponsors

A distinction must be made between cost sharing that is required by Congress, an agency, or a program officer and what is frequently offered by investigators in hope of persuading peer reviewers or sponsor staff to select their project for support. In addition, Federal Cost Accounting Standards require that most cost sharing, whether required or offered, be auditable.

The necessity to conserve University resources, while working to garner adequate support for University activities, suggests that careful attention be given to cost-sharing commitments.
