Limited Submissions Internal Competitions

Where are the Weekly Calls for Intent to Submit?

Many Limited Submission Opportunities that are not yet internal competitions (but may be) are announced in our Weekly Call for Intent to Submit newsletter (archived here). If they require an internal competition, that competition will be announced below.

This page lists Limited Submissions Internal Competitions that are coordinated by either the University of Michigan Office of Research (UMOR) or by the Medical School Office of Research.

What is a Limited Submission?

Limited Submissions are funding opportunities in which the sponsors limit the number of submissions allowed from an institution. The sponsors ask institutions like U-M to submit the most competitive proposal. To do so, an internal selection process is required to determine which proposals will go forward. See below for procedures.

Procedures to Note

  1. If you have reason to believe a funding opportunity you are interested in is limited, and you do not see it on this list, please contact us at This process is critical because extra submissions can result in the rejection by the sponsor of any submissions from the University of Michigan.

  2. This list contains limited submission competions that are coordinated by the U-M Office of Research (UMOR). It also contains links to limited submission competions that are coordinated by the U-M Medical School Office of Research.
  3. Prior to announcing an internal competition, we send out Calls for Intent to Submit to those signed up for our Email Campaigns (be sure to check that you would like to receive updates on Funding Opportunities and indicate your research area of interest).

  4. If you identify opportunity on your own and not through our process, you must still go through the limited submission process. You initiate that by contacting

  5. We cannot guarantee we will find every limited funding opportunity. We try to select those of interest. You may wish to sign up for external sponsor email alert services in order to find funding opportunities that are of specific interest to you.

  6. There will be times when the limited opportunity is learned of only belatedly. We know this is a challenge, but will do our best to get the communication out to you in reasonable time. (Again, you may wish to sign up for external sponsor email alert services to find funding opportunities of interest to you.)

  7. If the internal deadline has expired, feel free to still check. You may be able to still apply for a grant or award if the external deadline has not yet expired; please be sure to contact

  8. We will try to work with all interested parties in achieving a satisfactory outcome.
