Revision Summary

  1. There will be no preliminary proposals in this competition.
  2. Submissions will be limited to 1 proposal per lead institution.
  3. In this competition it is required that the training program explicitly propose new models in graduate education in which students are engaged in an environment that supports innovation; learn through hands-on experience how their own research may contribute in new ways to benefit society; and to learn the processes for the successful implementation of such contributions.
  4. The IGERT budget now includes a Competitive Incentive Fund for trainees in the amount of up to $200,000, for integrated interdisciplinary research and innovation activities.
  5. The IGERT budget now allows for 6 faculty months of salary to be used for IGERT curricular development.
  6. While IGERT projects must have the capability to communicate with each other and the NSF through videoconferencing, no specific system is required. Costs for developing a collaboration conference audio and video capability are no longer allowed.
  7. A data management plan is required. Please see the full text of this solicitation for further information.
  8. It is now made explicit that at the time of award, PIs will be required to obtain IRB approval for this award.
  9. The solicitation has been revised to allow for full reimbursement of indirect costs, based on the awardee's current Federally negotiated indirect cost rate agreement.
  10. Budgetary information has changed, including the amount allowed in year 1 for new and renewal proposals, see section F. Budget and Allowable Costs for more information.

Limit on Number of Full Proposals per Organization: 1 Full Proposal

There is a limit of one (1) proposal that may be submitted by an institution either as a single institution or as a lead institution in a multi-institution* proposal
(* A multi-institutional proposal is defined as one that has at least one co-PI at a different academic institution than that of the PI, a subaward to a different academic institution than that of the PI, or both.)

Limit on Number of Proposals per PI:

Any given individual may participate as PI or co-PI in only one proposal submission. A PI or co-PI on one proposal may serve as a faculty participant on other proposals.

Synopsis of IGERT Program:

The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers who will pursue careers in research and education, with the interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills to become, in their own careers, leaders and creative agents for change. The program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce.

If you are interested in claiming one of UM's pre-proposal slots as a "LEAD" or "SINGLE" institution, we would like to receive a three to six page summary from you that outlines:

  1. Why this proposal should be viewed as a priority for the University of Michigan;
  2. How it meets the IGERT program goals:
-- Outcomes you anticipate if your proposal is successful -- How you plan to enhance diversity in this IGERT program -- How you will address training students about how to communicate their research to non-scientific audiences
  3. Any peer review comments received on this application from any submission
  4. The estimated total cost of the project. Cost sharing: Inclusion of voluntary committed cost sharing is prohibited.
However, a participating institution is responsible for tuition and required fees in excess of the cost of education allowance.
  5. A list of Co-PIs involved in the proposal

Note: Requests to Rackham for cost-sharing support for tuition, health insurance and dental coverage shortfalls should be made as soon as possible and no later than two weeks before the UM Internal Competition due date. Send the preliminary fellowship budget and project description to Assistant Dean John Godfrey (jgodfrey@umich.edu) and Colleen Root (ckroot@umich.edu) (phone:764-8221). Rackham will also provide information for the preliminary and full proposals concerning Rackham support for the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities. Faculty must also consult Rackham if the proposal envisions major curricular modifications or a new degree or certificate program. Federal training grant shortfall page

Submit the summary to:
fastlane-admin@umich.edu with a copy to
mgparnes@umich.edu
Dave Plawchan; davedrda@umich.edu

and a copy of each summary submitted for review be given to the appropriate Research Dean by the Project Director / Principal Investigator.

Dr. Stephen Forrest, Vice President for Research, and Dr. Janet Weiss, Dean of the Graduate School, in consultation with others, will decide which proposal should be developed for submission to NSF. The finalists for this competition will be notified of their selection no later than April 13, 2012.

If you have any questions about project eligibility, please direct them to Dave Plawchan [fastlane-admin@umich.edu].
