The National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program

September 1, 2022

NIH LRPThe Loan Repayment Program (LRP) was established by Congress to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals into biomedical or biobehavioral research careers with a commitment to engage in NIH mission-relevant research.

The LRP counteracts financial pressure by repaying up to $50,000 annually of a researcher's qualified educational debt in return for a commitment to engage in NIH mission-relevant research. Each year, more than 1,600 researchers receive contracts from the NIH LRP.

The escalating costs of advanced education and training in medicine and clinical specialties force some scientists to abandon their research careers for higher-paying private industry or private practice careers.

Application Cycle Open from September 1 to November 17, 2022

The ORSP Institutional Business Official is Amanda Reel (REELA1), ORSP Project Representative, who must be listed on the application. Note that Amanda Reel’s Commons ID (REELA1) must be used and that all caps may be required. Contact Amanda with questions at reela@umich.edu.
