ReportingReporting Requirements

Basic Definition

Most sponsored projects require that final reports and/or deliverables be submitted to the sponsor shortly after the conclusion of the project. Some sponsors may also require more frequent reporting during the course of the project.

Why It's Important

Failure to adhere to the sponsor's reporting requirements may result in the sponsor withholding new awards, or suspending payments for costs on the completed project or other university projects funded by the sponsor.

How to Comply

Always consult the sponsor award for details on your specific project's reporting requirements.

Reports required at project closeout:

  • Final Scientific/Technical Report and/or Deliverable - the principal investigator (PI) is responsible for timely preparation and submission of this report/deliverable.
  • Final Financial Report - prepared by U-M Finance-Sponsored Programs and sent to the PI for review and signature approval prior to submission to the sponsor.

Other reports that may be required at project closeout:

  • Final Invention Report - the PI works with Innovation Partnerships (formerly the U-M Office of Technology Transfer) to complete and submit the report to the sponsor.
  • Final Property (Equipment) Report - prepared by the U-M Office of Property Control in consultation with the project team.
