About ORSP
The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) safeguards and advances the University of Michigan research enterprise by providing its partners with effective and efficient pre-award and non-financial post-award services for the compliant administration of externally sponsored grants, contracts and ancillary agreements.
For more than 100 years, ORSP has led U-M in sponsored projects administration. ORSP engages with faculty and staff across the University’s schools and colleges on all three campuses, as well as external sponsors.

Pre-Award Team
Reviews proposals according to deadline policy, sponsor guidelines, regulations and institutional policies; submits proposals; reviews and submits just-in-time requests; serves as the Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) for proposal submission and post-submission requests.

Contracts Team
Reviews and negotiates agreements for incoming funds and unfunded agreements, as well as associated amendments. Agreement types include but are not limited to nondisclosure agreements, data use agreements, clinical trial agreements, and other funded agreements related to sponsored projects.

Award Management Team
Handles non-financial post-award management of sponsored projects and serves as the AOR for post-award activities. Responsibilities include reviewing hardship requests, award setup, prior approval requests, modifications, progress reports, close-outs and representing the institution in interactions with sponsors.

Sponsored Project Coordination & eRA Systems Team
Ensures the efficient and accurate processing of activities and data that support sponsored project administration. The team validates and records data, establishes electronic records, initiates workflows in the electronic system and triages emails submitted to ORSP. The team also routes sponsor and other external communications to the appropriate ORSP team for follow-up. A subset of this team is responsible for administration of our contract lifecycle management system and supporting enhancements to the functionality of our electronic research administration (eRA) software.

ORSP and Sponsored Programs
The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) and Finance-Sponsored Programs each manage separate functions within the sponsored projects lifecycle.
