Navigate: Advanced Budgeting Task-Based/Hourly Budgets

This course exposes the learner to more advanced budgeting topics than those found in Navigate: Fundamentals and Navigate: Budgeting Basics courses. It is designed to provide immersive complex task-based and hour-based budget development and preparation training to the learner actively engaged in research administration. Learners will participate in class walk-through demonstrations, discussions of budget-building and problem-solving strategies typical in the context of proposal submission, and then complete a reinforcing budget development homework assignment.
Navigate: Fundamentals
Paused
The Fundamentals course is currently paused while it undergoes a comprehensive redesign. The updated course will align with the new Sponsored Project Lifecycle and incorporate feedback from research administrators to ensure the content remains relevant, practical, and responsive to learner needs. Additional information about 2027 course availability will be shared once the redesign is complete. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to explore on-demand online resources. These resources include eLearning modules, videos and live webinar sessions. Most of the eLearning modules feature selected content from the Fundamentals course.
Navigate: Uniform Guidance Cost Principles
Canvas Online Course
Successfully managing federally-sponsored research projects demands a comprehensive understanding of Uniform Guidance (UG) Cost Principles. This self-paced, 6-week asynchronous Canvas course is designed to guide new and experienced research administrators—whether you manage pre-award or post-award activities—through the complexities of UG compliance.
Navigate: Budgeting Basics for Sponsored Projects
Spring 2027
This course takes place in Canvas and via a virtual instructor-led Zoom session. By the end of the course, participants will master two to three basic budgets for sponsored projects. They will also receive a collection of job aids and templates to use as a reference for building similar budgets on their own.

Save the date for the fall Research Administrators’ Network (RAN) meeting for continuing education on U-M research administration topics and to hear from unit administrators and leaders in central administration. The meeting will be held in-person and virtually. Information on timing and registration to come soon.
