Manage Holds and Compliance Holds on Awards and Modifications
Holds may be placed on awards or modifications in U-M’s eResearch Proposal Management system when additional information is required. Learn more about the type of holds and possible reasons and resolutions.

Sometimes “holds” are placed an Award (AWD) or a Modification (MOD) within the eResearch Proposal Management (eRPM) system when additional information is required. The principal investigator(s) (PIs) and Primary Post-award Contact will receive an email when an eRPM record is moved to the state of HOLD or COMPLIANCE HOLD. The email may contain limited information about the hold. The information below provides additional guidance.
Types of holds
There are two types of holds, and the state of the eRPM record reflects which hold is in place:
- HOLD – This type of hold is manually applied as needed by the ORSP Officer (Project Representative in eRPM) prior to completing the PR Signoff activity. When an AWD or MOD is on HOLD, the ORSP Officer does not have enough information to approve the eRPM record until the reason for the hold is resolved. This type of hold may also be referred to as “PR Hold” or “Manage Hold.”
- COMPLIANCE HOLD – This type of hold is automatically applied as needed by the eRPM system following the completion of the PR Signoff activity. When an AWD or MOD is on COMPLIANCE HOLD, the PR approval is complete, but the eRPM record cannot move forward to begin financial processing until the reason for the hold is resolved.
On the main page of the eRPM record is a Compliance Status box that displays a red or green status light for each compliance item. A red light indicates the AWD or MOD processing has stopped, and the status light will change to green once the related compliance item is resolved.
