NIH: Date Extended for Upcoming Changes to Biosketch and Other Support Format Page

April 30, 2021

See ORSP update to this announcement.

NIH published a key update yesterday in NOT-OD-21-110, extending the deadline for the required use of updated format pages for Biosketches and Other Support to January 25, 2022.

The previously announced requirements regarding Other Support reporting and Biographical Sketches (Biosketches) will now apply to proposals and Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) on or after January 25, 2022.

Note that these changes will require additional time on your part when preparing your NIH proposal or RPPR. They are part of NIH’s efforts to respond to recent recommendations from the Office of Science and Technology Joint Committee on the Research Environment.

Upcoming Changes to Other Support

For submissions due on or after January 25, 2022, including RPPRs, a new format for NIH Other Support documents will incorporate the following changes:

  • Each Senior/Key Person must electronically sign their Other Support form. The Other Support format has a new signature block. Each Program Director/Principal Investigator or Other Senior/Key Personnel will be required to certify the accuracy of the information submitted by electronically signing their respective Other Support forms as a PDF prior to submission.

    • U-M is currently seeking clarification from NIH on what types of e-signatures will be acceptable.  Until further notice, U-M recommends using the SignNow e-signature service.

  • Each Senior/Key Person must provide copies of a) foreign contracts, b) foreign grants, and c) any other agreements specific to foreign appointments, affiliations, and/or employment with a foreign institution.  English-language translations must be provided for any original documentation that is not in English.

    • The guidance from NIH regarding what documents must be provided is not clear.  Until NIH provides further clarification, U-M recommends that Senior/Key persons provide copies for any foreign activity or resources in their Other Support, including consulting, contracts, grants, appointments/affiliations, or any other types of agreements.

    • All foreign documents (translated as necessary) should be combined and provided as a PDF following the Other Support form in Supporting Documentation.

      • U-M is currently seeking clarification on what types of translation services will be considered acceptable.

  • Reminder:  Other Support includes a faculty member’s private outside consulting if research is being conducted as part of the consulting activities.

  • NIH’s Other Support format now separates funded projects from in-kind contributions.

  • Immediately notify ORSP of undisclosed Other Support.  U-M now has a responsibility to immediately inform NIH of any undisclosed Other Support information that was missing from a proposal at Just-In-Time (JIT) or with an RPPR. If previously undisclosed Other Support information is identified, the project team must contact ORSP as soon as possible.

  • Additional resources

    • For users of SciENcv, the Other Support template is not expected to be available until after October 1, 2021.  Starting January 25, use an applicable Word format until the revised SciENcv template becomes available.

    • Additional details and resources can be found on NIH’s Other Support page.

Upcoming Changes to Biosketches

For submissions due on or after January 25, 2022, the format for NIH biosketches will incorporate the following changes:

  • List information in reverse chronological order in Section B (renamed ‘Positions, Scientific Appointments, and Honors’).  Include:

    • All positions, both domestic and foreign

    • All scientific appointments (new requirement), both domestic and foreign

      • Note: U-M is currently seeking clarification from NIH on what it considers a “scientific appointment.”

    • All affiliations with foreign entities or governments

    • All titled academic, professional, or institutional appointments:

      • whether or not remuneration is received, and

      • whether full-time, part-time, or voluntary (including adjunct, visiting, or honorary).

  • If desired, highlight details for ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years within the personal statement, Section A.

  • Section D ‘Research Support and/or Scholastic Performance’ has been removed, except for Fellowship biosketches.

  • Additional resources

    • For users of SciENcv, the updated SciENcv Biosketch template will be available in March 2021. Investigators with an existing Biosketch in SciENcv will be able to transfer their current Biosketch information to the new format.

    • Additional details and resources can be found on NIH’s Biosketch page.

Research Investigator Awareness

A similar message will be sent to all research investigators who have been listed on an NIH funding proposal (PAF) within the last three years.

These new requirements raise additional questions and concerns, and we are actively seeking further clarification from NIH on several topics.  We also realize that these changes may have significant impacts on researchers and project teams.  We will keep both faculty and Research Administrators up-to-date as more information and resources become available.

If you have questions, please email and view our Other Support web page.
